David Rea to Receive Outstanding Educator Award

On Wednesday, May 16, Colby College alumnus David Rea, a teacher at Laconia (N.H.) High School, will receive the Colby Outstanding Educator Award at a school assembly. Representatives of Colby’s Alumni Relations Office will present Rea with the award for exceptional distinction in the classroom.

Rea, a member of Colby's Class of 1971, has made many contributions to education in the New Hampshire public school system. He has served as chairman of the English Department at Laconia High School since 1981 and for 13 years has been the curriculum coordinator for the Laconia school district. He is a member of the State of New Hampshire Language Arts Curriculum Committee, a member of the New England Association of Schools & Colleges visiting team, and is involved in the Granite State Challenge quiz bowl for New Hampshire high school students.

At Laconia High School Rea helped develop the American Studies curriculum and introduced applied learning to the English curriculum. He has served as school coordinator of the PSATs and SATs and as chair of the committee to redesign the Laconia school system’s language arts program. Rea, described as dedicated and enthusiastic by his peers, teaches students the Charleston to pique their interest in The Great Gatsby and is a member of the band "Twisted Teachers," which has performed at school talent shows.

"David Rea is one of the finest faculty members that I have had the pleasure to work with in my 25-plus years in public school education," said Jon Freeman, principal of Laconia High School. "He is an inspiration to his peers and students because of his unselfish service and enthusiastic teaching."

The criteria for selection of the Colby Outstanding Educator Award is recognition as an outstanding educator by the recipient’s peers and students and evidence of the qualities that most encourage students to learn and be inspired to continue to learn.
