Reverend Peter Gomes to Speak at Colby Commencement

Rev. Gomes The Reverend Peter J. Gomes, the Plummer Professor of Christian Morals and Pusey Minister in Harvard University's Memorial Church, will be the commencement speaker at Colby College in Maine on Sunday, May 27. The ceremony begins at 10 a.m. on the lawn in front of Miller Library and the public is invited. Gomes, regarded as one of America's most distinguished preachers, will address more than 480 members of Colby’s Class of 2001, their families, the faculty and guests. The title of his address is "The Multitude of the Wise."

Aura M. Janze of Swanton, Vt., valedictorian and class marshal, will lead the procession of seniors. A biology major, she had a 4.08 cumulative grade-point average prior to the awarding of grades for the final semester. Todd W. Miner of Westwood, Mass., was elected senior class speaker. Miner is an English major with a concentration in creative writing.

Gomes graduated from Bates College and earned an S.T.B. degree at Harvard Divinity School. He is the author of seven volumes of sermons, including the national best sellers The Good Book: Reading the Bible with Mind and Heart and Sermons: Biblical Wisdom for Daily Living. In 1999 he was included in an article titled "The Best Talkers in America: Fifty Big Mouths We Hope Will Never Shut Up" in Talk magazine.

Gomes has preached and lectured throughout the United States and the British Isles. He participated in the inaugurations of presidents Ronald Reagan and George Herbert Walker Bush and was named Clergy of the Year in 1998 by Religion in American Life.

Honorary degrees will be presented to Gomes; Gerald Dorros, M.D., cardiologist and president of the Arizona Heart Institute & Foundation; Robert H. Edwards, outgoing president of Bowdoin College; and Linda J. Greenlaw, swordboat captain, author and 1983 Colby graduate.

Tickets will be required if weather requires moving the program to the Alfond Athletic Center. The event will be webcast live from the commencement Web site.
