Colby Reunion Weekend Begins Friday

Approximately 1,400 Colby College alumni and guests are expected to visit Waterville from Thursday, June 7, through Sunday, June 10, for 2001 Reunion Weekend. Colby graduates from the 1920s to the 1990s will participate in scheduled campus events such as class dinners, book signings with Colby authors, swing dance classes and educational panels with alumni and faculty. Golf outings, picnics, a museum tour and boat trips are among off-campus activities.

Friday night the Alumni Association will present awards. Robert W. Burke ’61 (Winchester, Mass.) will receive the Ernest C. Marriner Distinguished Service Award. David W. Miller ’51 (Osterville, Mass.) will receive the Distinguished Alumnus Award. Diana P. Herrmann ’80 (New York, N.Y.), Cynthia L. Auman ’80 (New York, N.Y.), Ronald W. Lupton ’71 (Wiscasset, Maine) and Robert M. Furek ’64 (West Hartford, Conn.) will receive Colby Brick Awards. A new distinguished service award named in honor of Maine native and Colby trustee, Edson V. Mitchell ’75, who died in a tragic plane crash in December 2000, will be presented to his family in his memory.

Saturday at 11 a.m. alumni will march in the parade of classes. The Colby College Museum of Art is open to the public the entire weekend. On view is "Maine Contemporary Furniture," including pieces by 18 Maine artists in a variety of styles and materials. The following reunion events on Saturday, June 9, are open to the public free of charge:

3 p.m. Antarctica to Tibet: Extreme Desert Adventures

3 p.m. Book Signing
Featuring alumni and faculty authors Ann Ruggles Gere '66, Robert Weinstein '76, Gerry Boyle '78 and history professor Richard Moss

Almost one half of the living members of the class of 1951 will return to Colby to celebrate their 50th reunion. Other classes ending in "1" or "6" will celebrate key reunion years.
