Pianist Berman at Colby on Sept. 22 On Saturday, September 22, pianist Donald Berman will perform a concert of works by composer Arthur Levering at Colby College in Waterville. The concert, part of the 2001-2002 Music at Colby concert series, begins at 7:30 p.m. in Lorimer Chapel. On Friday, September 21, Levering, a 1975 Colby graduate, will give a talk on his music at 4 p.m. in room 154 of Bixler Art and Music Center. Both events are open to the public and free of charge. An acclaimed pianist, Berman has been called a "thorough, exciting, luminescent musician" by The New York Times and a "first-rate" pianist by The Boston Globe. A frequent collaborator with contemporary composers, he has performed the premieres of works for Collage, Nuclassix, Real Art Ways and Guild of Composers. He is also a winner of the 1991 Schubert International Competition in Germany, directed the Firstworks program for First Night Boston and is currently developing the Rome Prize Concerts in New York City. Arthur Levering has been a fellow in composition at many venues including the Aspen Music Festival, the Norfolk Chamber Music Festival and the MacDowell Colony. His awards include a 1994 National Endowment for the Arts Fellowship, the 1992 Lee Ettelson Composer’s Award from Composers and two Composers Guild first prizes. In 1996 Levering was awarded the Frederic A. Juilliard/Walter Damrosch Rome Prize Fellowship from the American Academy in Rome.
