Colby Announces Fall Visiting Writers Series Colby College's 2001-02 Visiting Writers Series will hold three poetry and fiction readings this fall on the Waterville campus. Each program will begin at 7 p.m. in the Robins Room on the second floor of Roberts Building and is open to the public free of charge. A book signing by the author will follow each of the readings. The Visiting Writers Series is sponsored by Colby's creative writing program. On Tuesday, September 25, novelist Suzanne Berne will read selections from her latest work, A Perfect Arrangement. In 1999 Berne received the prestigious Orange Prize for excellence in women's fiction for her first novel, A Crime in the Neighborhood. Berne is a frequent contributor to The New York Times Book Review. She currently teaches at Harvard. On Tuesday, November 13, poet Wes McNair will read selections of his work. He is the author of six collections of poetry, including The Town of No & My Brother Running, The Faces of Americans in 1853 and, most recently, Fire. The recipient of grants from the Rockefeller, Fulbright and Guggenheim foundations, McNair has also been awarded two NEA Fellowships in poetry, the Eunice Tietjens Prize from Poetry magazine, the Theodore Roethke Prize from Poetry Northwest and the Sarah Josepha Hale Medal for his "distinguished contribution to the world of letters." A television program on Robert Frost for which he wrote the script aired on PBS affiliates and won an Emmy Award. McNair currently directs the Creative Writing program at the University of Maine at Farmington. Also on Tuesday, November 13, at 4 p.m. the Colby Bookstore, in the Roberts Building, will hold a book party featuring new works by: Bill Roorbach, visiting associate professor of English at Colby, (The Smallest Color, a novel, and Big Bend, winner of the Flannery O'Connor Award for Short Fiction); Wes McNair, professor of English at the University of Maine at Farmington (The Faces of Americans in 1853, a poetry collection); and Debra Spark, associate professor of creative writing at Colby, (The Ghost of Bridgetown, a novel). The authors will be available for book signing, and refreshments will be served. For more information contact the Colby Bookstore at 207-872-3609. On Tuesday, November 27, former Colby professor Rick Russo will read selections from his recently released novel Empire Falls, set in a depressed Maine mill town. The New York Times said, "Mr. Russo has an instinctive gift for capturing the rhythm of small-town life." Russo's other acclaimed novels include The Risk Pool, Straight Man and Nobody's Fool, the latter made into a film starring Paul Newman. Says Publishers Weekly: "When it comes to evoking the cherished hopes and dreams of ordinary people, Russo is unsurpassed." This reading is sponsored by the Clark-Donnelley Fund for Visiting Writers.
