Free Organ Concert August 15 at Bates

On Tuesday, August 15, at 7:30 p.m. at the Bates College Chapel in Lewiston, concert organist Stewart Wayne Foster will perform a tribute of works by Johann Sebastian Bach. The concert is open to the public and free of charge. This event is part of the 44th annual Richner-Strong Church Music Institute at Colby College.

Foster won the Dallas International Organ Competition in 1997, which carried the largest prize ever awarded to an organist, and the "Prize of the Audience." Among his other competitions, Foster won first prize in the William Hall Pipe Organ Competition and was a finalist in the American Guild of Organists' National Organ Playing Competition.

Foster has appeared as an orchestral soloist and solo recitalist in concerts across the country and has performed regularly in France. His first CD, a recording of French symphonic organ literature, was released in January 2000. Foster is associate organist at First (Scots) Presbyterian Church and coordinator of the Piccolo Spoleto Organ Series, both in Charleston, S.C. He earned a master's degree in harpsichord and early music at the University of North Texas in Denton and studied at the French music conservatory L'Ecole Normale Superieure de Musique de Paris, where he received a diplf4;me de concertiste.

On Thursday, August 17, at 7:30 p.m. at Merrill Auditorium in Portland, organist John Rose will perform a concert on the newly refurbished Kotzschmar organ. On Friday, August 18, at 7:30 p.m. in Colby's Lorimer Chapel in Waterville, Richner-Strong Institute participants will hold a church music festival service. For more information call Colby's Special Programs office at (207) 872-3386.

NOTE: This concert replaces the August 15 organ concert by Huw Lewis scheduled for Bates College Chapel. All other church music concerts remain as originally scheduled.
