Events Planned for Family Homecoming Weekend at Colby

Family Homecoming Weekend will be held at Colby College in Waterville Friday, October 26, to Sunday, October 28. Many events will be open to the public, and all are free of charge unless otherwise noted. Sporting events will include football and men's soccer against Bates and the women's volleyball State of Maine Championship.

Friday, October 26

  • The 6:30 p.m. and 9 p.m. concerts at the Waterville Opera House by Colby's five a cappella groups are sold out.

    Saturday, October 27

  • From 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. the Colby Craft Fair in the Field House of the Harold Alfond Athletic Center will feature displays from more than 85 crafters.
  • At 10:45 a.m. Crawford Family Professor of Religious Studies Thomas Longstaff will present "Sepphoris: The Forgotten City of Mary and Joseph" in room 100 of Lovejoy Building.
  • At 11 a.m. the women's crew team will hold a boat dedication ceremony for The Hilary S. Gehman '93, named in honor of Colby's 2000 Olympian in quadruple sculls, at the Colby Hume Center on Messalonskee Lake.
  • At 11:45 a.m. William R. Keenan Jr. Professor of Government L. Sandy Maisel will present "From Visitors in a Promised Land to Citizens at Home: Jews in American Politics from Mordecai Noah to Joe Lieberman" in room 105 of the Keyes Science Building.

  • At 12:45 p.m. Clare Boothe Luce Assistant Professor of Biology Andrea Tilden will present "Keeping Time: The Neurological Basis of Biological Clocks" in room 1 of F.W. Olin Science Center.
  • At 2 p.m. and at 4 p.m. Colby Improv will perform in Given Auditorium of Bixler Art and Music Center.
  • At 4 p.m. the Colby Chorale will perform a "Preview of a Tour" and Collegium Musicum will perform a "Sample of Renaissance Music" in the Colby College Museum of Art.
  • At 4:30 p.m. the Dr. Ralph J. Bunche Family Symposium will sponsor a performance by the theatrical group Seven Quilts for Seven Sisters in the Page Commons Room of Cotter Union.
  • At 5 p.m. the Colby Jazz Ensemble will present a "Hot and Cool" concert in Given Auditorium of the Bixler Art and Music Center.
  • At 7 p.m. the Colby Dancers will perform in Given Auditorium of the Bixler Art and Music Center.
  • At 7:30 p.m. the Colby Symphony Orchestra will perform works by Igor Stravinsky and Anton Dvorak in Lorimer Chapel.
  • At 8 p.m. Step Afrika! will perform at the Waterville Opera House. Step Afrika! is a collaborative project between young artists from the United States and the South Africa-based Soweto Dance Theatre. Admission is $5 and tickets must be purchased in advance.

    All Weekend

  • "Skowhegan School 2001" is on view at the Colby College Museum of Art. The exhibit consists of approximately 25 works of different media, including photographs, paintings, video, silkscreen and etchings from Skowhegan School of Art resident and visiting artists. The museum is open Monday through Saturday from 10 a.m. to 4:30 p.m., and on Sunday from 2 to 4:30 p.m.
