Shakespeare's "The Winter's Tale" Performed
William Shakespeare's The Winter's Tale will be staged by Colby's Department of Theater and Dance on November 16, 17 and 31 and December 1. All performances are at 7:30 p.m. in Strider Theater, in the Runnals Building on the Waterville campus. One of Shakespeare's final plays, The Winter's Tale mixes comedy with elements of tragedy and fantasy. The plot sweeps through the havoc that a fit of jealousy wreaks on a family and then leaps ahead 16 years to watch nature and chance heal wounds and restore harmony.
The cast of 18 is led by four Colby seniorsMonty Hobson as the rash Leontes; Kristin Elder as his generous wife, Hermione; Jory Raphael as the rapscallion Autolycus; and Rebecca Sharp as loyal Paulina. The story's varied characters include two non-humans, Time (Nandini Naik) and Bear (Jordan Finley).
Professors Richard Sewell (director and costume design) and James Thurston (set and lights) collaborate to stage the play. Music professor Steven Nuss composed music for the show. The production is set in an abandoned botanical conservatory where a modern acting troupe rehearses; it focuses on the nature of destruction, survival and triumphant rebirth. A 1989 Colby production of The Winter's Tale was Sewell and Thurston's first collaboration and, with Sewell's upcoming 2002 retirement, the 2001 production is expected to be their final collaboration. "We have a very different concept this time," said Sewell, "a measure of change and growth, I hope, for both of us."
