Steve Kidd to Perform Original "Sigh/Omelas"

Steve Kidd will perform his original one-man show Sigh/Omelas on Thursday, December 6, at Colby. The event is at 8 p.m. in Strider Theater in the Runnals Building on the Waterville campus. It is open to the public and free of charge. Kidd developed Sigh/Omelas in response to his ongoing work with children who are affected by or afflicted with HIV and AIDS. His original dramatic text is interwoven with Ursula K. LeGuin's "The Ones Who Walk Away From Omelas," a haunting and provocative story of the fictional utopian city of Omelas, where people live in happiness and joy...but at what cost?

Kidd has performed Sigh/Omelas at the Boston Center for the Arts and the Firehouse Theater in Newburyport, Mass., and he has upcoming engagements off-Broadway and in Chicago and Richmond, Va. A member of the Colby Class of 1997, Kidd graduated with an English and performing arts double major. He is currently pursuing a master's degree in theater studies at Brown University.

Larry Stark of The Theater Mirror said: "Perhaps you will be lucky enough to hear that Sigh is being presented again. If you get the chance, experience this hour and a quarter of theatrical excellence. It is rare that a performance can so remind us of the dangers, the beauty, and the obligations involved in being human.... The best solo performance of the year. Steve Kidd IS his characters; floating unrestrained emotions with exactly realized detail and lending every phrase, each work, expressive weight, humor and honesty."

The performance is sponsored by the Colby Health Center, Student Health on Campus and the Offices of Alumni Relations and Career Services.
