Revisionist American-History Author to Speak at Colby
On Sunday, September 3, at 4:30 p.m., American historian James Loewen will speak in the Page Commons Room of Cotter Union at Colby College in Waterville. Loewen is the author of "Lies My Teacher Told Me: Everything Your American History Textbook Got Wrong" (1995). The event is open to the public and free of charge.
"Lies My Teacher Told Me" examines historical figures and events that have been ignored or misrepresented in standard school history books. Loewen spent several years, including one at the Smithsonian Institution, surveying the 12 leading high school textbooks used in American history classes. He discovered what he calls "blind optimism and outright misinformation" in the books. Loewen is an adjunct professor of sociology at Catholic University. He has also been on the faculty of the University of Vermont.
Loewens forthcoming book, "Lies Across America: What Our Historic Sites Got Wrong" (November 2000), corrects the numerous mistakes on historical markers and monuments on view across the American landscape.
Every year a book is chosen for the incoming first-year students to read prior to their arrival at Colby. "Lies My Teacher Told Me" was the first-year book for the Class of 2004.
