Symphony Orchestra Presents Evening of Music for Children On Sunday, December 2, the Colby College Symphony Orchestra will perform a concert for children of all ages. The concert begins at 7 p.m. in Colby's Lorimer Chapel on the Waterville campus. It is open to the public free of charge. Designed to please both the young and the young at heart, the concert will feature Colby's "first lady" Cathy Bruce as narrator and Colby orchestra tubist Scott Vaillencourt as Tubby in "Tubby the Tuba," the classic musical tale of an oom-pah-ing tuba who wants to sing like all the other instruments. Also included in the evening's offerings will be a visit to the opera and debut performances by 6-year-old conductor Olivia Benissan and 14-year-old pianist Jillian Jacobs. Directed by Jonathan Hallstrom, associate professor of music, the Colby Symphony Orchestra is a 65-piece ensemble that performs major works from the standard symphonic literature of all periods. In addition to students, who make up about half of the ensemble, the Orchestra is staffed by Colby's applied music associates and local amateurs and professionals. |
