Colby Wellness Lectures Open to Public
At Colby College in Waterville, a series of wellness lectures this winter and spring will address topics of mental, emotional, social and physical well-being. Lectures are open to the public free of charge. All of the following programs will be held in the Page Commons Room in Cotter Union.
Tues., Jan. 15, at 8 p.m.
Nan Bell: "What's Love Got to Do With It"
Bell will explore what love is and what love isn't in a dating relationship. Video, handouts and interactive discussions will help identify characteristics of an abusive relationship and "red flags" will be examined. The presentation will conclude with a review of the hallmarks of a healthy relationship.
Tues., Jan. 22, at 8 p.m.
Stephen Sears, M.D., M.P.H.: "Know Before You Go"
Sears is senior vice president of MaineGeneral Medical Center, an infectious disease specialist and an authority on travel medicine. He will provide tips on safety in travel.
Tues., Feb. 12, at 8 p.m.
Steve Wessler: "Preventing Bias, Prejudice and Hate Crimes"
Wessler will examine the extent of bias, prejudice and harassment at Colby, the relationship between the use of degrading language and slurs and the occurrence of hate crimes, and what students can do to ensure that Colby is a safe and respectful place for every student.
Sun., Feb. 17, at 7 p.m.
"The Vagina Monologues"
The show features women's issues such as sexual identity, self-discovery and assault in comic, poignant and sometimes shocking vignettes performed by Colby women. The Colbyettes singing group will open the event. A $5 donation to Waterville's Rape Crisis and Assistance Prevention Center is requested.

ADD VERB Productions: "The Thin Line"
"The Thin Line," a 30-minute one-woman show, tells the story of one girl's struggle with anorexia and the struggles of those close to her to understand and to help. ADD VERB promotes awareness and understanding of socially relevant issues through theater and seeks change through acting and breaking the silence that permeates trauma, while providing support.
Tues., Feb. 26, at 8 p.m.
Jackson Katz: "More than a Few Good Men"
Katz will present a lecture on American manhood and violence against women. Katz regularly inspires both men and women to confront one of the most serious problems facing college students today: men's violence against women.
Tues., Mar. 5, at 8 p.m.
PJ Mears: "Is Biology Your Destiny? The Interdependent Relationship Between Sex, Gender and Sexual Orientation"
Mears is director of Transgender Advocacy for Maine. His multimedia lecture will cover sex, gender and sexual orientation and will include discussions of transgender identity, homophobia and heterosexism.

Dan Zevin: "Life After College"
Multimedia presentation based on Zevin's bestseller "Entry-Level Life: A Complete Guide to Masquerading As a Member of the Real World," covering everything you never learned about life after college. |
