"The Maroni Notebook" to Premiere at Colby in February

On February 7, 8 and 9 the Colby College Department of Theater and Dance will present the premiere performance of The Maroni Notebook, a drama written and directed by Richard Sewell, professor of theater and dance. The work is Sewell's final production after 28 years of teaching at Colby.

A drama with comic moments, The Maroni Notebook centers around the English expatriate authors Robert and Elizabeth Browning, who shelter the mysterious Maronis on the eve of an Italian revolt. Colby senior Eric Laurits and junior Christina Wallace will play the leads of Robert and Elizabeth Browning. Senior Emily Bridwell and junior Walter Belenky will play Agnes and Albert Maroni. First-year student Andrew Volk is the Browning's conservative medico friend, and senior Greg Robinson is Albert’s spirit-medium father.

"It fits the Brownings to mix the rum of history with the molasses of fiction," said Sewell. "Robert Browning had a taste for that brew. Playwriting isn't propaganda, but people in my recent plays seem to be looking for alternatives to nationalism. In this play there is only a brief glimpse of that; the issue is really whether a poet rescues her poems—which she believes are superb--or her husband--whom she believes is a cad. Her call's a close one."

The Maroni Notebook will be performed February 7, 8 and 9 at 7:30 p.m. nightly in Strider Theater of the Runnals Building. General admission is $3; students and seniors are $2. For ticket information call the box office at 207-872-3358 between 4-6 p.m. Monday through Saturday of performance weeks. Or call 207-872-3388 between 9 a.m.-4 p.m. Monday through Friday.
