Schubert's "Die Winterreise" Performed at Colby

On Thursday, February 7, at Colby College in Waterville, acclaimed tenor William Hite and pianist Michael Baumann will perform Franz Schubert's Die Winterreise (The Winter's Journey). The performance will begin at 7:30 p.m. in Given Auditorium of Bixler Art and Music Center. It is open to the public and free of charge.

Die Winterreise, Schubert's second major cycle of songs, was completed just a year before the young composer's death. The 24 songs in the cycle form a narrative tale describing the journey through a winter landscape by a man whose love affair has ended unhappily. Schubert, who composed more than 600 songs in his brief career, was considered at the peak of his creative powers when he composed Die Winterreise.

Hite has appeared with the American Symphony Orchestra, the New York City Ballet and Boston Baroque. He has participated in many productions for the Boston Early Music Festival, with roles in King Arthur, Luigi Rossi's Orfeo and Pietro Francesco Cavalli's Ercole Amante. Hite also has performed with the American Repertory Theater and the Kentucky Opera. He teaches voice at Boston University.

The concert is sponsored in part by the Hazel Witherell Memorial Concert Fund and the Freda M. Charles Music Fund at Colby.
