Colby Dance Theater Performs March 8-9, 15-16

The Department of Theater and Dance at Colby College in Waterville will present performances by Colby Dance Theater, the college's repertory dance company, Friday, March 8, Saturday, March 9, Friday, March 15, and Saturday, March 16, at 7:30 p.m. nightly in Strider Theater of Runnals Building. The performances will feature five compositions in contemporary dance, choreographed and performed by professional choreographers and advanced students.

Tina Wentzel, adjunct professor of theater and dance, choreographed two works. "Moving and Staying Like White Water" is inspired by the laundry day images in Richard Wilbur's poem "Love Calls Us to the Things of This World." Accompanied by traditional roots and bluegrass music, the lyrical dance contrasts the dire poverty of 1930s America with folk art, music and simple celebrations of life. "Cut Off," an abstract re-staged version of Wentzel's 1980 original, uses movement, costumes, music and lighting to reflect the sense of being cut off in a variety of ways.

Holly Labbe, a 1994 Colby graduate, choreographer and performer from Augusta, choreographed two works, including "6 Statements," a new work commissioned by Colby’s Department of Theater and Dance. "6 Statements" examines truth, falsehood and deception in human relationships. "The Yellow Wallpaper," inspired by the Charlotte Perkins Gilman short story of the same name, is set to music by Henryk Gorecki and features a cast of seven women. Sophomore Elizabeth Holmes of Germany will perform her original piece, "Time Out," which portrays the beauty of skipping out of daily life for a while.

General admission is $3; students and seniors are $2. For ticket information call the box office at 207-872-3358 between 4-6 p.m. Monday through Saturday of performance weeks. Or call 207-872-3388 between 9 a.m.-4 p.m. Monday through Friday. Tickets may also be reserved online at www.colby.edu/theater.
