Beowulf Performed at Colby March 18
Nobis spent three years editing and translating Beowulf, a tale of Scandinavian heroes, monsters and epic battles, from the original Old English. When his translation was published in 2000, Nobis and Irish director Conway brought it to the stage. The Beowulf production has since appeared at Scotland's Edinburgh Fringe Festival and to sold-out audiences across Ireland. Nobel Prize-winning poet Seamus Heaney, whose own translation of Beowulf won the prestigious 2000 Whitbread Prize, said: "This is a true telling performance by Felix Nobis. As a performer and translator of the Beowulf story he has found a style that's high, but not inflated, true to the poetry of the original and enthralling to a contemporary audience." Nobis trained as an actor in Australia and his career ranges from Shakespearean plays to the popular Australian soap Neighbours. He is also a two-time winner of the Australian Poetry Cup. Conway has directed extensively in Ireland, England and America, and also studied theater at Colby. The event is co-sponsored by Colby's Cultural Events Committee, the Farnham Writers' Center and English Department. |

On Monday, March 18, actor Felix Nobis will present his one-man presentation of Beowulf, the Old English epic poem. The one-hour performance is based on Nobis's own translation of the ancient poem and is directed by Thomas Conway. The performance begins at 7:30 p.m. in Strider Theater of Runnals Building and is open to the public free of charge.
