Maine Carvers Exhibit at Colby Museum

An exhibit of Maine woodcarvings will be at the Colby College Museum of Art in Waterville from March 3 to April 7. Nineteen artists from the Maine Wood Carvers Association, a non-profit group dedicated to the education, promotion and advancement of woodworking, will have works on display. The exhibit features more than 80 carvings, including waterfowl decoys, songbirds and painted wooden figures. The replicas of nature and folk-art figures are whittled from solid wood, including cedar, basswood, African mahogany and white pine.

The exhibit was organized by woodcarver Gerry Boutin and includes master wildlife carvers Ed Beach of Readfield and Gordon Harde of Sidney. An opening reception will be held at the museum on Sunday, March 3, from 3 to 4:30 p.m. and the public is invited.

Also on exhibit at the museum are an exhibition of sculptures and drawings by Harriett Matthews and The Joan Whitney Payson Collection--26 works by world-famous Impressionist and Post-Impressionist artists, including Courbet, Daumier, Monet and Renoir.

Colby museum hours are 10 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. Monday through Saturday, and 2 p.m. to 4:30 p.m. Sunday. Admission is free, and the museum is accessible to persons with disabilities. For information call (207) 872-3228 or visit www.colby.edu/museum.
