Civil Rights Activist to Speak at Colby March 20 The Rev. Richard D. Leonard, a participant in Martin Luther King Jr.'s 1965 civil rights march in Alabama, will be at Colby College in Waterville on Wednesday, March 20. Leonard will discuss his experiences as a civil rights activist and his recently published book, Call to Selma: Eighteen Days of Witness. The lecture will be held at 7:30 p.m. in the Pugh Center of Cotter Union and is open to the public free of charge. Leonard, a graduate of Yale College and Union Theological Seminary, is currently a minister emeritus of the Unitarian Church of All Souls in New York City. In 1965, at the age of 37, he was among the clergy who answered Martin Luther King Jr.'s call for support in the struggle for racial justice underway across the nation. Call to Selma: Eighteen Days of Witness centers on the detailed journal Leonard maintained during his time in Alabama. The event is sponsored by Colby's History Department and African-American Studies and American Studies programs. |
