Colby Cares About Kids Honored by Governor King On Monday, March 18--Maine Mentoring Day--Colby Cares About Kids will be one of eight mentoring programs recognized by Governor Angus King. At 11:30 a.m. in the Hall of Flags of the State Capital Building in Augusta, Governor King will give a press conference on the growth of mentoring in Maine and will formally recognize eight programs. Teresa Hawko, an AmericaCorps*VISTA volunteer at Colby and the Colby Cares About Kids program coordinator, will represent the program along with several Colby mentors and program board members. Colby Cares About Kids is a program that pairs 155 Colby student mentors in one-on-one relationships with Waterville, Benton, Clinton and Vassalboro youths. The pairs meet weekly at a participating elementary school, junior high school or youth center. The program came out of research conducted in Waterville schools by Colby students in a service-learning introductory English course. Seeing how children benefit from positive role models, members of the class drafted a proposal last spring for the mentoring program and Colby Cares About Kids began in the fall. The press conference will be preceded by a 10 a.m. presentation by Lance Hidy, the artist behind the "Mentor a Child" commemorative postal stamp issued in January. The U.S. Postal Service will sell mentor stamps and do a special cancellation for the day, including the Maine Mentoring Partnership logo. |
