Expert at Colby to Discuss Islamic Fundamentalism

On Tuesday, April 2, University of Southern Maine political scientist Mahmud Faksh will speak at Colby College in Waterville on "Islamic Fundamentalism in the Middle East." The lecture will begin at 7 p.m. in room 1 of the F.W. Olin Science Center. It is open to the public free of charge.

A native of Aleppo, Syria, Faksh's articles on the Middle East and Islamic affairs have appeared in such publications as The Islamic Quarterly, Middle East Policy and The Boston Globe. He is the author of the book The Future of Islam in the Middle East: Fundamentalism in Egypt, Algeria and Saudi Arabia and is currently a professor of political science at the University of Southern Maine.

Faksh has taught at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill, the University of Connecticut and King Saud University in Saudi Arabia. He also served as Senior Research Associate in the Islamic and Arabian Development Studies Program at Duke University. He earned a bachelor's degree from American University of Beirut, a master's degree from Oklahoma State and a Ph.D. from the University of Connecticut.
