Activist Group The Guerrilla Girls at Colby April 4 The Guerrilla Girls, a group of anonymous women artists, writers and performers, will be at Colby College in Waterville on Thursday, April 4. They will present "Your Cultural Conscience" at 7 p.m. in the Page Commons Room of Cotter Union. The presentation is part of Colby’s Women’s Studies Colloquia and is open to the public free of charge. Established in 1985, the Guerrilla Girls have dubbed themselves "the conscience of culture." They wear gorilla masks to focus attention on issues rather than their personalities and act as feminist counterparts to the mostly male tradition of masked do-gooders like Robin Hood. The Guerrilla Girls have created more than 80 posters, ads, billboards and protest actions that expose sexism and racism in art, film, politics and society. They have published two books, Confessions of the Guerrilla Girls and The Guerrilla Girls Bedside Companion to the History of Western Art. A third book, Bitches, Bimbos and Ballbreakers: The Guerrilla Girls Illustrated History of Female Stereotypes, will be released in 2002. |
