Sociologist Derber to Lecture at Colby April 18

Author and scholar Charles Derber will present the annual Kingsley Birge Lecture in Sociology at Colby College in Waterville on Thursday, April 18. Derber, the author of several books on American culture and global capitalism, will give a talk at 8 p.m. in the Pugh Center of Cotter Union. The event is open to the public and free of charge.

Derber argues that problems of community are tied to economic and political forces, and that solutions will require a greater democratization of the corporate system. His books include Corporation Nation: How Corporations Are Taking Over Our Lives and What We Can Do About It, The Wilding of America and The Pursuit of Attention: Power and Individualism in Everyday Life. He has published articles in numerous newspapers and magazines on corporate power and the American Dream. Derber received his Ph.D. from the University of Chicago. He currently is a professor of sociology at Boston College and has served as director of the school’s Program in Social Economy and Social Justice.

The Kingsley Birge Lecture was established in 1981 in honor of the late Kingsley Harlow Birge, Colby professor of sociology, with donations from his students, friends and colleagues. The fund brings to campus speakers who give public lectures relating to the human experience and human potential.
