Southworth Lecture on Historic Men’s Fashions April 22

Edward Maeder, curator of textiles and chair of the curatorial department at Historic Deerfield in Massachusetts, will present the annual Clara M. Southworth Lecture at Colby College in Waterville on Monday, April 22. Maeder's lecture "A Personal Environment: Men's Fashion 1760-1860" will be presented at 7:30 p.m. in Given Auditorium of the Bixler Art and Music Center. He will explore the use of clothing as silent communication, as physical and social protection, and as a barometer of developments in science, mechanical knowledge and commerce.

After completing his bachelor's degree at the University of Wisconsin and a master's degree in the history of art at the Courtauld Institute in London, Maeder held several curatorial positions in costume history. He was the founding director of the Bata Shoe Museum in Toronto, which, with 10,000 items from 3,000 B.C. to the present, is the largest museum in the world devoted to shoes. He has also worked as a curator at the Los Angeles County Museum of Art and at the Fashion Institute of Technology in New York. In his career Maeder has organized more than 40 exhibitions and given numerous lectures on a broad range of subjects relating to textiles, costume and conservation.
