Winona LaDuke to Speak at Colby April 23

Native American author and activist Winona LaDuke will be at Colby College in Waterville on Tuesday, April 23, to present the lecture "The Environment and Social Justice." The event will be held at 7:30 p.m. in Lorimer Chapel and is open to the public free of charge.

LaDuke, an Ojibewa activist who lives on the White Earth Reservation in Northern Minnesota, began her activist career at the age of 18, when she spoke in front of the United Nations on Native American issues. In 1994, she was nominated by Time magazine as one of America's 50 most promising leaders under 40 years of age, and she was Ralph Nader's vice presidential running mate in both the 1996 and 2000 presidential elections.

LaDuke has received numerous awards for her work on behalf of Native Americans and the environment, including the Ms. Magazine Woman of the Year Award, the Ann Bancroft Women's Leadership Award, the Global Green USA Millennium Award for Individual Leadership and a Reebok Human Rights Award, with which she founded the White Earth Land Recovery Project in 1988 to reclaim Aninishaabe tribal land. A Harvard-educated economist, LaDuke has published numerous articles, testified at government hearings and written several books, including All Our Relations and the novel Last Standing Woman.
