U.S. District Judge Singal to Deliver Lipman Lecture

On Wednesday, April 24, U.S. District Judge of Maine George Z. Singal will present Colby College's annual Lipman Lecture on "Speaking Back to God: My Mother and Bontshe Shveig." The 7:30 p.m. talk will be held in Given Auditorium of the Bixler Art and Music Center on the Waterville campus. The talk is open to the public and free of charge.

Singal was born in a refugee camp in Italy after his family fled Poland prior to the German occupation. He arrived in Bangor in 1949 with his sister and widowed mother, attended the University of Maine and graduated from Harvard Law School in 1970. Singal joined the firm of Gross, Minsky, Mogal and Singal in Bangor, where he continues to practice today. From 1971 to 1973, Singal also served as Assistant District Attorney for Penobscot County. Listed in "Best Lawyers in America" since 1989, Singal has earned a reputation as an outstanding trial lawyer.

Singal was nominated for the position of U.S. District Judge for the District of Maine by President Clinton in May of 2000 and was confirmed by the Senate that June. Singal has served as chairman of the Governor’s Judicial Selection Committee and has been a member of numerous judicial advisory boards and organizations, including several committees to nominate Magistrate Judges in Maine.

The Lipman Lecture, presented annually, was endowed by Bernard Lipman '31 and is devoted to the advancement of Jewish studies at Colby.
