Colby Orchestra and Chorale to Perform May 4 and 5

On Saturday, May 4, and Sunday, May 5, the Colby Symphony Orchestra, the Colby College Chorale and the Colby-Kennebec Choral Society will perform together at Colby's Waterville campus. The concerts will be held at 7:30 p.m. nightly in Lorimer Chapel. They are open to the public and free of charge.

The combined ensembles, under the direction of music professors Jonathan Hallstrom and Paul Machlin, will perform a variety of works from European and Russian composers. The concert program opens with what is considered one of Haydn's greatest works, the four-movement Symphony No. 88, which is alternately stately, sprightly, pastoral and even comic. The concert also includes Verdi's Stabat Mater and Ave Maria and Borodin's Polovtsian Dances. Selections from Borodin's opera Prince Igor, sung in Russian in the original orchestration, evoke the Russian nationalist musical tradition.

Maine's largest college orchestra, the Colby Symphony Orchestra includes student, faculty and community musicians. The Colby College Chorale is the college's largest singing group and features more than 70 Colby students. The Colby-Kennebec Choral Society includes Waterville-area community musicians and Colby faculty members and staff.
