Colby Undergraduate Research Symposium May 2-3

The third annual Colby College Undergraduate Research Symposium will be held Thursday, May 2, and Friday, May 3, on the Waterville campus. James Gustave Speth, dean and professor of environmental policy and sustainable development at the Yale University School of Forestry and Environmental Studies, will give the symposium’s keynote address. His lecture is titled "The Cascading of Environmental Consequences: Are We Running Out of Time?" and begins at 7:30 p.m. on Wednesday, May 1, in room 1 of the F.W. Olin Science Center. All of the symposium events are open to the public and free of charge.

Speth recently served as administrator of the United Nations Development Programme and chair of the UN Development Group. Previously he was founder and president of the World Resources Institute, a professor of law at Georgetown University, chairman of the U.S. Council on Environmental Quality and a senior attorney and cofounder of the Natural Resources Defense Council.

Colby students from a range of programs and departments will present the results of their research in paper and poster presentations over the two days in the Smith, Whitney and Hurd rooms on the second floor of Roberts Building. All day Thursday students will formally present research in the humanities, social sciences and physical sciences. On Friday afternoon students will present research in life and physical sciences, fine arts and the humanities. Research posters from all disciplines will also be on display both days, with students available to answer questions from noon to 2 p.m. More than 300 students are involved in the symposium and its associated presentations.

For a detailed event schedule visit the symposium Web page at www.colby.edu/res_symp or contact Matthew Schwartz at 207-872-3610. The event is sponsored by Colby's Office of Academic Affairs and the National Science Foundation Award for the Integration of Research and Education.
