Jacquette and Burckhardt Works at Museum A pair of exhibits by two contemporary artists closely associated with Maine will headline this summer's exhibition schedule at the Colby College Museum of Art in Waterville. Aerial Muse: The Art of Yvonne Jacquette, the first-ever career retrospective of the painter and printmaker, will be at the museum July 17 through October 13. Rudy Burckhardt's Maine, an exhibit of photographs, paintings and films derived from the artist's experiences in Maine, will be at the museum July 17 through October 20. An opening reception will be held on Wednesday, July 17, from 3 to 4:30 p.m. and the public is invited.
Colby museum hours are 10 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. Monday through Saturday, and 2 p.m. to 4:30 p.m. on Sunday. Admission is free, and the museum is accessible to persons with disabilities. For information call 207-872-3228 or visit www.colby.edu/museum. |

Aerial Muse: The Art of Yvonne Jacquette features approximately 40 paintings, drawings, pastels and prints that illustrate the development of the artist's landscapes from 1975 to the present. Jacquette is best known for her aerial views of the urban landscape. From the perspective of high-rise buildings and airplanes Jacquette has produced day and nighttime views of cities and towns, factories and farmlands, power plants, pastures and woodlands. Her work balances abstraction and conceptualism to examine the relationships between man and nature, rural and industrial settings, and labor and leisure. Aerial Muse, now on a national tour, is organized by the Iris and B. Gerald Cantor Center for Visual Arts at Stanford University. The exhibit is accompanied by a comprehensive catalogue documenting Jacquette's career.
Rudy Burckhardt's Maine features photographs, paintings and films derived from Burckhardt's experiences in Maine where he had a summer home. A native of Switzerland, Burckhardt came to New York in 1935 and later married Jacquette. As part of a circle of artists that included Alex Katz, Burckhardt photographed the arts community that shaped post-WWII American art. He also created diverse photographic works and a number of experimental films. The subjects of his paintings included cityscapes, details of everyday life and close-ups of rural landscapes near his home in Searsmont, Maine. Burckhardt died in 1999 in Maine. Vincent Katz is the guest curator of Rudy Burckhardt's Maine.
