Portland String Quartet Opens Music Series at Colby The Portland String Quartet will perform on Saturday, September 16, at Colby College in Waterville. The concert begins at 7:30 p.m. in Lorimer Chapel and is part of the 2000-01 Music at Colby concert series. The program will include Adagio and Fugue in C Minor, K 546 by Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart, String Quartet in C Minor, Op. 18, No. 4 by Ludwig van Beethoven and a new work by Colby Associate Professor of Music Jonathan Hallstrom. Commissioned by the Portland String Quartet, Hallstrom’s piece uses two loudspeakers as "virtual performers" that play computer generated sounds to complement and extend the resources of the traditional string quartet. The Portland String Quartet is composed of violinists Stephen Kecskemethy and Ronald Lantz, cellist Paul Ross and Julia Adams on viola. The ensemble, which has played together longer than any U.S. quartet except the Guarneri String Quartet, has established a reputation for strong performances on its international tours, and its recordings on the Arabesque and Northeastern labels have won a variety of honors. The musicians are artists-in-residence at Colby and have conducted a string quartet institute there for the last 25 summers.
