String Quartet Performances at Colby, July 30 through August 10

A series of string quartet concerts will be held July 30 through August 10 at Colby College in Waterville. Two formal concerts by the Portland String Quartet are set for July 30 and August 6; two performances by participants in the 27th annual Portland String Quartet Workshop at Colby will be presented August 10.

• The Portland String Quartet will perform Tuesday-evening concerts on July 30 and August 6. The 7:30 p.m. performances will be in Lorimer Chapel. Admission is $12, $10 for seniors, and there is no charge for students 21 years old or younger. The program for July 30 includes String Quartet in D Minor, Op.76, No. 2 by Franz Joseph Haydn, String Quartet No. 3 by Bela Bartok and String Quartet in F Major, Op. 18, No. 1 by Ludwig van Beethoven. The August 6 concert will feature String Quartet in B-flat Major, K. 589 by Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart, String Quartet No. 1 by Charles Ives and String Quartet in A Minor by Fritz Kreisler.

• Participants in the Portland String Quartet's 27th annual summer string quartet workshop will perform at 2:30 p.m. and at 7:30 p.m. on Saturday, August 10, in Lorimer Chapel. The concerts are open to the public free of charge. The workshop attracts a select group of musicians from around the world who spend two weeks at Colby in July and August in an intensive schedule of rehearsals, coaching sessions and master classes.

Portland String Quartet members Julia Adams, Stephen Kecskemethy, Ronald Lantz and Paul Ross have played together longer than any U.S. quartet except the Guarneri. The group was founded in 1969 and currently is celebrating its 32nd season without a change in personnel. The quartet has established a reputation for strong performances on its international tours, and its recordings have won a variety of honors.
