Lecture on Terrorism and Weapons of Mass Destruction September 18

Wednesday, September 18, at Colby College Jack Mendelsohn will present "The Lessons of September 11th for U. S. Foreign Policy: Terrorism and Weapons of Mass Destruction." Mendelsohn is an arms control expert, retired State Department official and consultant to several non-governmental organizations. The lecture will be held at 7 p.m. in Room 01 of the F.W. Olin Science Center on the Waterville campus. It is open to the public and free of charge.

Mendelsohn, a former senior foreign service officer, has published, lectured and consulted widely on arms control and national security issues. He served on the U.S. delegations for the Strategic Arms Limitation Talks (SALT II) and Strategic Arms Reduction Treaty (START I). He was a political officer in Haiti and Warsaw and at the U.S. Mission to NATO and was dean of the School of Languages of the Department of State. After retiring from the State Department in 1985, Mendelsohn became deputy director of the Arms Control Association, a non-governmental organization in Washington, D.C. In 1998 he was appointed the John M. Olin Professor of National Security at the U.S. Naval Academy in Annapolis. In 1999 he became vice president of the Lawyers Alliance for World Security. Mendelsohn is now an adjunct professor at George Washington University and a consultant to several NGOs in the U.S. and the U.K.
