Former German Mayor to Speak at Colby, October 17

Hinrich Lehmann-Grube, the former mayor of Leipzig, Germany, will give the lecture "Twelve Years United Germany--A Story of Success and Failure" on Thursday, October 17, at Colby College in Waterville. The lecture will begin at 4:30 p.m. in Room 205 of the Lovejoy Building. Lehmann-Grube will discuss the fundamental changes that occurred during the reunification of Germany and the transition of East Germany from a totalitarian political system to a market-oriented democracy. Refreshments will be served prior to the event.

Lehmann-Grube was a city council member in the West German city of Hanover before the collapse of the communist German Democratic Republic. He moved east with his family after the collapse and in 1990, in the first free elections, was elected mayor of Leipzig, Saxony, a city of 500,000 residents and the second largest in East Germany. Lehmann-Grube served as the city’s mayor from 1990 to 1998.
