Shange’s for colored girls who have considered suicide… at Colby October 17-19

For Colored... The Department of Theater and Dance at Colby College will present three performances of for colored girls who have considered suicide when the rainbow is enuf Thursday, October 17, through Saturday, October 19. Performances of Ntozake Shange’s choreopoem will be held nightly at 7:30 p.m. in Strider Theater of Runnals Building on the Waterville campus. Admission is charged. The play is co-directed by Associate Professor of Theater and Dance Joylynn Wing and Adjunct Professor of Theater and Dance Tina Wentzel.

For colored girls features seven actresses, each identified only by a color, who present a series of choreographed poems. The production celebrates the lives of women of color with stories of oppression and transcendence. Shange’s play received critical acclaim after its Broadway debut in 1976 and has since been considered an American classic.

Alice-Marie Allen '04 (Limerick, Maine) will play the part of Lady in Brown, Lindsay Lanier '04 (Los Angeles) will play Lady in Blue, Breilyn Brantley '04 (Cypress, Texas) will play Lady in Yellow, Adelin Cai '05 (Singapore) will play Lady in Orange, Kate Campbell '05 (Missoula, Mont.) will play Lady in Purple, Amina McIntyre '04 (Atlanta, Ga.) will play Lady in Red, and Jane Lee '06 (Tujunga, Calif.) will play Lady in Green.

General admission is $3; students and seniors are $2. For ticket information call the box office at 207-872-3358 between 4-6 p.m. Monday through Saturday of performance weeks. Or call 207-872-3388 between 9 a.m.-4 p.m. Monday through Friday.
