Juliet Garcia to Speak at Colby October 19 Juliet Garcia, president of the University of Texas-Brownsville, will be the keynote speaker for the 2002 Dr. Ralph J. Bunche Symposium at Colby College in Waterville. Garcia will deliver her address at 4:30 p.m. on Saturday, October 19, in the Page Commons Room of Cotter Union. The lecture is free of charge and open to the public. Along with serving as a university president since 1992, Garcia has 25 years of experience in higher education as a teacher and administrator. She is the first Mexican-American woman in the country to become president of a college or university and has been active in advocating for increased higher education opportunities for minority students. Garcia was instrumental in implementing an innovative educational partnership between a university and community college that has eliminated transfer barriers for students and provided improved higher education opportunities for the people of South Texas. She was appointed to the Council of Advisors to Education Transition Team for the Clinton Administration, served as chair of the American Council of Education and is currently the chair of the Advisory Committee to Congress on Student Financial Assistance. The Bunche Symposium is held annually at Colby College in conjunction with the Ralph J. Bunche Scholarship program for outstanding students of color. The scholarship program was started at Colby in 1979 to honor the memory of the Nobel prize-winning diplomat, civil rights activist, friend of the college and Colby parent. |
