German Filmmaker Beyer to Speak at Colby November 14 German filmmaker Frank Beyer will speak on "Filmmaking in the German Democratic Republic" on Thursday, November 14, at Colby College in Waterville. His lecture will be held at 4 p.m. in Room 205 of the Lovejoy Building. The lecture will be followed by a 7 p.m. screening of Beyer's 1974 film Jacob the Liar in Room 100 of the Lovejoy Building. Beyer will introduce the film and will be available for questions following the screening. Both events are open to the public and free of charge. Beyer was educated and trained in East Berlin. He worked as an assistant director at the DEFA Film Studios and at the Prague Film School. German Democratic Republic officials banned his 1966 film Traces of Stones for being "politically inappropriate" and he was not allowed to work again as a film director until his re-emergence in 1974 with his film Jacob the Liar. This is the only German Democratic Republic film ever nominated for an Academy Award for best foreign film. After 1990 Beyer directed several other films and the TV series Nikolaikirche, which recounted the events that led to the downfall of the communist German Democratic Republic and German unification. |
