Carlsen, Patches and Tschanz Perform Music Nov. 24

Violinist and violist Mary Jo Carlsen, mezzo-soprano Elizabeth Erskine Patches and pianist Cheryl Tschanz will perform together in concert at 3 p.m. on Sunday, November 24, at Colby College. The concert will be held in Given Auditorium of the Bixler Art and Music Center on the Waterville campus. Part of the 2002-2003 Music at Colby series, the event is open to the public and free of charge.

Carlsen, Patches and Tschanz will perform a variety of works including pieces by American composer Gia Comolli, Russian composer Alfred Schnittke and Czech composer Leos Janácek.

Carlsen, an applied music associate at Colby, performs music from the Renaissance through the 21st century on violin, Baroque violin and viola. As a violinist and violist she performs with the Portland Symphony, the Portland Opera Repertory Theater, the Maine Chamber Ensemble and the Atlantic Chamber Orchestra. As a Baroque violinist she plays with the Portland Early Music Consort and the Maine Baroque Ensemble. She is also concertmistress of the Colby Symphony Orchestra.

Patches, an applied music associate at Colby, has given voice recitals in Alice Tully Hall, Town Hall and the 92nd Street "Y" in New York. She has made solo appearances with symphony orchestras, oratorio societies and chamber music groups in the United States, Canada and Europe. She records for SeeArts Records and has performed on National Educational Television.

Tschanz, an adjunct associate professor of music at Colby, made her major orchestral debut with the Cleveland Symphony Orchestra at the age of 11. She has performed on the piano throughout the United States, Canada, France, Italy and Finland. She also has performed in New York's Lincoln Center and Carnegie Recital Hall.
