U.S. Poet Laureate Robert Pinsky at Colby December 4

Pinsky Robert Pinsky, former U.S. poet laureate, will read selections of his poetry on Wednesday, December 4, at Colby College in Waterville. The reading will begin at 8 p.m. in the Robins Room of Roberts Building. Pinsky will be available for a book signing following the event.

In 1997 Pinsky was named the 39th United States Poet Laureate and Consultant in Poetry to the Library of Congress and served until 2000. He is the only three-term U.S. poet laureate. As poet laureate he created the popular "Favorite Poem Project," in which people from all walks of life read their favorite poem and explain its importance. The project resulted in Americans' Favorite Poems, an anthology of 200 poems submitted to the project along with readers' letters about their attachments to the poems.

Pinsky's own work includes a translation of Dante's Inferno, which appeared on the best-seller lists of the Boston Globe and New York Newsday. The Inferno of Dante won both the Los Angeles Times Book Award in poetry and the Howard Morton Landon Prize for translation. Pinsky also is the author of six books of poetry, the most recent of which is Jersey Rain. His honors include an American Academy of Arts and Letters award, Poetry Magazine’s Oscar Blumenthal prize, the William Carlos Williams Award and a Guggenheim Foundation fellowship.

Pinsky is a regular commentator on PBS's Lehrer News Hour, poetry editor of the online magazine Slate and teaches in the graduate writing program at Boston University.

Information on the Favorite Poem Project can be found at the project's Web site: www.favoritepoem.org.
