CBB Diversity Conference at Colby, Feb. 7-8
On Saturday, February 8, at 8 p.m. playwright, poet, actor and activist Sarah Jones will perform her solo show, Surface Transit, a collection of eight New York characters waxing neurotic. This keynote event of the conference will be held in the Page Commons Room of Cotter Union. Jones currently is suing the Federal Communications Commission for censoring radio airplay of her anti-misogynist poem/song, Your Revolution. She is arguing that her spoken-word song with sexual imagery is not indecent and that the FCC violated her First Amendment rights when it fined KBOO-FM, a listener-supported radio station in Portland, Ore., $7,000 for playing Your Revolution. Nominated for a Drama Desk Award, Surface Transit enjoyed sold-out runs at The Kennedy Center and won the Best One Person Show award at HBO's Aspen Comedy Arts Festival in 2000. In 2000 Time magazine chose Jones as a person to watch, Entertainment Weekly featured her as the "It" performer of the year and Variety counted her among the top 10 comedic talents. She appeared in Spike Lee's film Bamboozled and starred in The Vagina Monologues off-Broadway and in Los Angeles. On Friday, February 7, at 9 p.m. the Kinsey Sicks, who call themselves America's favorite dragapella beauty shop quartet, will perform. The event will be in the Page Commons Room of Cotter Union. The Kinsey Sicks have been called "gut-wrenchingly funny" (The Advocate) and their off-Broadway show, Dragapella!, was nominated for a Drama Desk Award. A conference on race, religion, sexuality, gender, ethnicity and socio-economic background sponsored by the students of Colby, Bates and Bowdoin colleges, will be held at Colby in Waterville February 7-8. Highlights of the third annual CBB Diversity Conference include poet Sarah Jones performing her acclaimed play Surface Transit at 8 p.m. on Saturday, February 8. Performances, lectures and student-led workshops will be held throughout the weekend. Workshops will include "Coalition Building," "The Many Faces of Feminism" and "Privilege: What are you going to do about it?" All events listed are open to the public free of charge.
