Immigration Researcher to Lecture March 6 Author and immigration researcher Mary Waters will present the annual Kingsley Birge Lecture in Sociology at Colby College in Waterville on Thursday, March 6. Waters's talk, titled "Becoming American: The New Second Generation in American Society," will begin at 7:30 p.m. in the Pugh Center of Cotter Union. The event is open to the public and free of charge. Waters is known for her research in race and ethnicity, immigration and demography. She is co-director of the New York Second Generation Project, which examines the lives of young adults whose parents were immigrants to the United States. Waters is the author of the award-winning book Black Identities: West Indian Immigrant Dreams and American Realities. She has served as a consultant to the Census Bureau, testified before Congress on the measurement of race and ethnicity and is a member of the U.S. Census Advisory Committee of Professional Associations. Waters received her Ph.D. in sociology from the University of California at Berkeley and she is currently chair of the Department of Sociology at Harvard University. The Kingsley Birge Lecture was established in 1981 in honor of the late Kingsley Harlow Birge, Colby professor of sociology, with donations from his students, friends and colleagues. The fund brings to campus speakers who give public lectures relating to the human experience and human potential. |
