Southworth Lecture on Architecture and the Media March 11

Terence Riley, chief curator of architecture and design at The Museum of Modern Art in New York, will deliver the 33rd annual Clara M. Southworth Lecture in Environmental Design at Colby College in Waterville on Tuesday, March 11. The lecture, titled "Architecture and the Media: Changing Relationships," will begin at 7:30 p.m. in Room 01 of the F.W. Olin Science Center. Riley's talk and slideshow will look at the role of architecture as a source of information from the time of the cathedrals through contemporary architecture. The lecture is open to the public and free of charge.

Riley joined the Museum of Modern Art (MoMA) in 1991 and was named chief curator in 1992. Exhibits he has organized include the retrospectives "Mies in Berlin" and "Frank Lloyd Wright: Architect" and a restaging of MoMA's first exhibition on architecture titled "Exhibition 15: The International Style and The Museum of Modern Art." Riley's exhibits have focused primarily on major figures and themes in contemporary architecture. Currently he is working on an exhibition of visionary architectural drawings from the museum’s collection. He also has been involved in the selection committees for architects to design and rebuild the area of the World Trade Center.

Before joining MoMA Riley established an architectural practice with John Keenen. In 1989 Riley was curator of "Paul Nelson: Filter of Reason," the inaugural exhibition at the Arthur Ross Architecture Galleries at Columbia University, where he served as director until 1991. He earned his architecture degrees at the University of Notre Dame and at Columbia.
