Colby Dance Theater Performs March 13-15

CDT Colby Dance Theater, Colby's repertory dance company, will perform Thursday, March 13, Friday, March 14, and Saturday, March 15, at 7:30 p.m. nightly in Strider Theater of Runnals Building on the Waterville campus. The performances will feature four compositions in contemporary dance, choreographed and performed by professional choreographers and advanced students in the Department of Theater and Dance at Colby.

The program will feature three new pieces and a re-staging of choreographer Heidi Henderson's piece for five women, "Skirt," originally created in 1999 for her Rhode Island dance company. Henderson, a member of the Colby Class of 1983, toured for eight years as a dancer in the companies of Bebe Miller, Nina Wiener, Paula Josa-Jones and others. The Providence Phoenix recently said, "'Skirt is mesmerizing to watch, partly because of the gliding, swooping movement of the dancers, as they hold their overlong skirts above their feet."

CDT Tina Wentzel, artistic director and adjunct professor of theater and dance, has created a piece inspired by Anita Daiamant's 1998 novel The Red Tent. A period piece set in Biblical times, it focuses on the shared experience of women during menses and childbirth. Wentzel also collaborated with members of this year's choreography class to produce "Support/Hands."

Sarah Style, a senior theater and dance major from South Orange, N.J., has created a piece where ordinary walks with subtle differences grow into dance with patterns and purpose. Slightly silly transformations from a pedestrian strut to a lively romp explore the possibility of dancing from place to place.

Randall Klein is guest costume designer and Gregg Carville is guest light designer for the production.

General admission is $3; students and seniors are $2. For ticket information call the box office at 207-872-3358 between 5-7:30 p.m. Wednesday through Saturday. Or call 207-872-3388 between 9 a.m.-4 p.m. Monday through Friday. For more information on upcoming productions visit the Theater and Dance Web site at www.colby.edu/theater.
