Colby Sinfonietta to Perform March 15
On Saturday, March 15, the Colby College Sinfonietta will perform its debut concert. The concert will begin at 7:30 p.m. in Lorimer Chapel on the Waterville campus. Part of the 2002-03 Music at Colby concert series, the event is open to the public and free of charge.
The program will explore the variety of styles and colors available in 20th-century literature. The concert program will feature works by four composers--Anton Webern's Variations for Orchestra Op. 30, Libby Larsen's Songs of Light and Love, with soprano Christina Astrachan, Toru Takemitsu's Rain Coming and Steve Reich's 8 Lines.
The four works are seldom heard outside major metropolitan venues because of the extraordinary demands placed on the players, each of whom must essentially function as a soloist, says conductor Jonathan Hallstrom, associate professor of music. "All are exquisite and compelling and the concert promises to be a rare treat," he said.
The Colby Sinfonietta, under the direction of Hallstrom, is an elite chamber orchestra comprised of the top student and professional performers from Colby's full symphony orchestra. For information about this years schedule of Music at Colby events contact the Music Department at 207-872-3236.
