Foreign and Familiar Photographs by Dee Peppe at Museum

Chicken Foreign and Familiar, a series of photographs by Dee Peppe will be shown at the Colby College Museum of Art in Waterville April 6 through June 8. An opening reception for the exhibit will be held at the museum on Sunday, April 13, from 2 - 4:30 p.m. It is open to the public and free of charge.

Foreign and Familiar features large black and white prints of locations in Maine, the United States, Central America and Europe. Peppe's work is based on her fascination with humanity, her interest in architectural forms and her passion for travel. From the streets of San Francisco to the beaches of Belize, Peppe visually explores the people and their unique relationship to their environment.

Peppe says her photographs are filled with spontaneity as she records the fleeting moments when the elements fall into place and people are synchronized with their surroundings. "These single frames offer a stage-like narrative as though the people are part of a silent, unending cast of characters," she said.

Peppe, a visiting assistant professor of art at Colby, resides in Appleton, Maine. She is the founder and director of the Mid-Coast Community Darkrooms in Rockland and is on the Maine Arts Commission Roster and Registry. Her work has been exhibited locally and nationally. Peppe will present a gallery talk about the Foreign and Familiar on Sunday, May 4, at 3 p.m. at the museum.

Colby museum hours are 10 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. Monday through Saturday, and 2 p.m. to 4:30 p.m. Sunday. Admission is free, and the museum is accessible to persons with disabilities. For information call 207-872-3228 or visit www.colby.edu/museum.
