Sha Sha Higby to Perform April 4

Sha Sha Higby International performer and sculpture artist Sha Sha Higby will present The Yellow Cup, a solo dance performance, on Friday, April 4, at Colby College in Waterville. The performance will be held at 7:30 p.m. in Strider Theater in the Runnals Building. An opportunity to meet the artist and examine her sculptural costumes will be provided.

Through sculptural costume, dance and puppetry Higby explores the borders between death and life. She is known for her evocative and haunting performances with elements of Asian and Western traditions. Higby creates rich costumes she meticulously forms from wood, paper, silk, lacquer, ceramics and gold leaf. In her performances she inhabits her sculptures and brings them to life through subtle dance movements.

Higby has studied dance and craft making in Asia for many years. On her first Fulbright Scholarship she spent a year in Japan and five years in Indonesia and on her second Fulbright Scholarship and an Indo-American fellowship she traveled to India. Higby, of Bolinas, Calif., has performed and taught throughout the United States, Asia, Australia and Europe.

General admission to The Yellow Cup is $3; students and seniors are $2. For ticket information call the box office at 207-872-3358 between 5 and 7:30 p.m. Wednesday through Saturday of performance weeks. Or call 207-872-3388 between 9 a.m. and 4 p.m. Monday through Friday. For more information on upcoming productions visit the Theater and Dance Web site at www.colby.edu/theater.

On Thursday, April 3, Higby will present an artist’s talk at 5 p.m. in Room 14 of Miller Library. The talk is open to the public and free of charge.
