Mentoring Expert Jean Rhodes at Colby April 17

Jean Rhodes, professor of psychology at the University of Massachusetts, Boston, will speak at Colby College in Waterville on Thursday, April 17. The title of her talk is "Stand by me: The Risks and Rewards of Mentoring Today's Youth." The lecture will begin at 7 p.m. in Room 105 of the Keyes Science Building. It is open to the public and free of charge.

Rhodes has written extensively on the role of mentors in promoting positive developmental outcomes among children and adolescents. She participated in research on urban adolescents who are involved in the Big Brothers Big Sisters program. Her findings provide evidence of the potential of mentoring relationships, while also exposing the risk for harm that unsuccessful relationships can create.

Rhodes currently is involved in studies on supportive relationships in the lives of young mothers, students in school and after-school settings, and immigrant youths. She is a fellow of the American Psychological Association and the Society for Community Research and Action, a member of the MacArthur Network on the Transition to Adulthood and author of a monthly research column for the National Mentoring Partnership. In 2002 Rhodes published the book, Stand By Me: The Risks and Rewards of Youth Mentoring.

The lecture is organized by the Colby Cares About Kids program, which pairs Colby student mentors in one-on-one relationships with Waterville, Benton, Clinton, Winslow, Oakland and Vassalboro youths.
