Rodman to Discuss American Nuclear Strategy April 18

On Friday, April 18, Kenneth Rodman, the William R. Cotter Distinguished Teaching Professor of Government at Colby College, will present a lecture titled "Is American Nuclear Strategy Too Unilateral? The Debate Over National Missile Defense and the Bush Doctrine." The event will begin at 4 p.m. in room 14 of Miller Library on the Waterville campus. Part of the Science, Technology and Society Speaker Series, it is open to the public and free of charge.

Rodman, a specialist on foreign policy issues, will critically assess the Bush administration’s unilateral approach to nuclear security issues and its skepticism towards multilateral treaties and institutions. The primary focus will be on the abrogation of the ABM (Anti-Ballistic Missile) Treaty in favor of National Missile Defense, which will be placed within the context of a broader range of issues, including the nuclear test ban treaty, the North Korean nuclear crisis, arms control agreements with Russia and conventions dealing with chemical and biological weapons.
