Colby Orchestra and Chorale to Perform April 26 and 27

On Saturday, April 26, and Sunday, April 27, the Colby Symphony Orchestra, the Colby College Chorale and the Colby-Kennebec Choral Society will perform together at Colby's Waterville campus. The concerts will be held at 7:30 p.m. nightly in Lorimer Chapel. They are open to the public and free of charge.

The first half of the concert will feature the Colby Orchestra, conducted by music professor Jonathan Hallstrom, performing Samuel Barber's Concerto for Violin and Orchestra and Bedrich Smetana's The Moldau. Colby senior Matthew Riportella-Crose of Plainfield, Vt., will be the soloist for the Barber piece.

After intermission the Colby Chorale will perform works of living American composers, including a commissioned work by Michigan composer Kristin Kuster. The combined ensembles, under the direction of visiting music professor Steven Grives, will close the evening with Pulitzer Prize-winning composer John Corigliano's Fern Hill, which explores the themes of youth, nature and lost innocence in Dylan Thomas's poem of the same name.

Maine's largest college orchestra, the Colby Symphony Orchestra includes student, faculty and community musicians. The Colby College Chorale includes students from a range of academic disciplines. The Colby-Kennebec Choral Society includes Waterville-area community musicians and Colby faculty members and staff.
