Former Federal Reserve Governor at Colby April 24

On Thursday, April 24, Laurence Meyer of Washington's Center for Strategic and International Affairs will give a talk at Colby College in Waterville. The lecture will begin at 4 p.m. in Room 01 of the F.W. Olin Science Center. It is open to the public and free of charge.

While serving as a Federal Reserve governor from 1996 through 2002, Meyer became known as an influential member of the Federal Open Market Committee and built a reputation for independent thinking and straight talk about monetary policy. He has been acclaimed for his ability to bring clarity to the chaos of economic data and to demystify the art and science of monetary policymaking.

In addition to monetary policy, Meyer's focus on the board of governors was bank supervision and regulation. He was chairman of the board's Committee on Supervisory and Regulatory Affairs, and oversaw the board’s regulatory implementation of financial modernization legislation and its participation in negotiations toward a new international capital accord.

Meyer is currently a distinguished scholar at the Center for Strategic and International Studies in Washington, D.C. He consults with financial firms around the world on the U.S. economic outlook and monetary policy prospects. Meyer is working on a book about his experiences in the Federal Reserve System.
