Colby Undergraduate Research Symposium May 1-2, Keynote Address April 30
The fourth annual Colby College Undergraduate Research Symposium will be held Thursday, May 1, and Friday, May 2, on the Waterville campus. Robert Pennock of Michigan State University will give the symposiums keynote address. His lecture is titled "Attacking Clones and Killer Tomatoes: What Are the Real Ethical Challenges of Genetic Technology?" and begins at 7:30 p.m. on Wednesday, April 30, in Room 01 of the F.W. Olin Science Center. All of the symposium events are open to the public and free of charge.
Pennock is a philosopher of science who has lectured widely on topics relating to science and society. He is a lecturer at the Lyman Briggs School and Department of Philosophy at Michigan State University. As a philosopher of science, Pennock encourages students to consider fundamental questions about the nature of scientific observation, theory and ethics.
Colby students from a range of programs and departments will present the results of their research in paper and poster presentations over the two days on the second floor of Roberts Building. All day Thursday from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. and on Friday afternoon from 1 to 5:30 p.m. students will present research in all of the academic disciplines. Research posters from all disciplines also will be on display both days, with students available to answer questions from noon to 2 p.m.
Colby emphasizes research and project-based learning and the Colby Undergraduate Research Symposium is an outgrowth of the National Science Foundation's AIRE Grant, which recognized the College's leadership in this area.
