Colby and Clean Air-Cool Planet Form Emissions-Reducing Partnership

Colby College has become a partner in a region-wide program to reduce the emissions that cause global warming. The College joins more than 60 colleges, universities, communities and corporations in the Northeast working with Clean Air-Cool Planet, the region’s leading nonprofit in seeking solutions to global warming. The announcement came at Clean Air-Cool Planet's Climate Solutions for the Northeast conference in Hartford, Conn., on Monday.

"In the 1970s Colby was a national leader in adopting environmental studies and environmental science as academic disciplines. Since then the College has made significant progress addressing a wide range of environmental concerns in recent years," said Colby President William D. Adams. "This partnership recognizes current and past efforts by the people of Colby to be responsible stewards of our environment, and it will spur the College to explore new strategies for reducing greenhouse gas emissions associated with our operations going forward."

This year environmental studies students completed an inventory of emissions data going back to 1990, one of the goals pledged by program participants. Colby also agrees to raise awareness about the importance of addressing climate change within the campus community; consider a greenhouse gas emissions reduction target; develop and implement a strategic plan, consisting of policies, programs and significant actions, to meet that target; monitor progress over time; and incorporate emissions reduction goals into long-term campus planning and reporting practices.

"What's especially gratifying is that our partnership with Colby College has been established at the highest level, in that President Adams has committed the school to work with us toward meaningful reductions in the pollutants that cause global warming," said Adam Markham, Clean Air-Cool Planet's executive director.

The Portsmouth, N.H.-based Clean Air-Cool Planet also announced partnerships with Colgate in Hamilton, N.Y., St. Joseph College in Hartford, Conn., Eastern Connecticut State University and Connecticut College.
